Orthopedic Telemedicine: Talk to a Regenexx Physician Online

At Regenexx, our commitment is to the health and safety of our patients. This is why we have launched a telemedicine program that delivers the same high quality of an in-person visit while following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) social distancing guidelines to reduce the risk of exposure to coronavirus.

Telemedicine FAQs

Who can benefit from orthopedic telemedicine?

Our program gives patients real-time face-to-face access to a physician who can help them with a variety of orthopedic muscle and joint conditions, including:

  • New or chronic orthopedic muscle and joint pain either from injury or overuse
  • In cases where an orthopedic surgery was canceled and the issue persists
  • First-time appointments for those with orthopedic needs
  • Follow-up appointments to continue treatment plans
  • People looking for alternatives to surgery or for a less invasive solution

Our goal for new patients is to help diagnose their issue(s) and candidacy for a Regenexx procedure, and for existing patients, it’s to keep their diagnosis and treatment moving forward through remote patient monitoring.

What do I need?

There is no special equipment required. You just need:

  • A home computer, tablet, or smartphone
  • An internet connection
  • Patient medical history and exam paperwork submitted via the Regenexx telemedicine website

How does telemedicine work?

These visits are usually scheduled just like any other visit. However, rather than coming to the office, you’re usually sent a link to click that downloads the telemedicine “room.” Oftentimes you’re greeted by a medical assistant who will take some basic history. When the doctor enters the virtual room, he or she can see you and vice versa. They should be able to share the screen to show you films or lab results. The doctor can prescribe medications, imaging, procedures, physical therapy, or anything else that needs to be done.

Is it covered by insurance?

Insurance companies have started to cover various types of virtual doctor exams during the crisis. Once you are connected with your Regenexx physician’s office you can discuss your specific insurance coverage.

How does Regenexx handle privacy and safety?

Regenexx as a national clinic system helps patients avoid invasive surgeries for orthopedic problems by using state-of-the-art precise image-guided, image-guided regenerative medicine procedures. Given that our purpose is to help painful knees, backs, neck, hips, and shoulders, we needed a telemedicine system that was geared more toward the musculoskeletal system than to adjusting someone’s blood pressure medication.

Many telemedicine systems are designed to layer in extra steps to comply with HIPAA, but some of these rules have been relaxed during the crisis. So in our search for a video-conferencing system, we wanted one that would be easy and familiar for patients. That’s why we chose a medical version of the world’s most popular video-conferencing system, Zoom. If you work in business and have remote meetings, you already know Zoom.

When the patient calls a local Regenexx provider or the national call center, he or she is given an appointment just as if they were being seen in the office. The only difference is that the scheduler sends out a reminder email with a link that the patient clicks to see the doctor.

What should I expect from a Regenexx virtual doctor visit?

Virtual online visits are very similar to a typical office visit. However, the physical office is replaced with telecommunication technology in the form of a video call. It’s a simple three-step process:

  1. Your online doctor appointment is scheduled either with a Regenexx Regenerative Medicine Consultant or directly with your Regenexx physician’s office. You’ll then receive confirmation of your appointment with a link to your virtual doctor’s office. Make sure you mark your calendar.

  2. You’ll be directed to complete a self-exam and patient history form that you’ll submit through a secure web portal. Your doctor will review the information with you in greater detail during your appointment.

  3. On the day and time of your appointment, you’ll be greeted by either a medical assistant or staff member and then meet with your doctor. Screens are two-way, so you will be able to share and discuss diagnosis, imaging, medication, treatment options, and more.
