Knee Replacement or Knee Replacement Alternative?

Can a simple video explain why you might want to consider a knee replacement alternative? One of my favorite books as a medical student was a series written by a physician artist who explained the musculoskeletal system in very simple ways. As you can tell from our videos on everything from knee replacement alternatives to stem cells to platelets, I love explaining complex things in ways that don’t put distance between the doctor and the patient. Awhile back, I found myself repeating the same thing time and time again to our knee patients who were considering a knee replacement and looking for an alternative. The research I had highlighted on the blog was strongly questioning whether knee replacement was the right option for many patients; but just lecturing to them, I was sure was putting some of them asleep! So, I had our animator put together a simple, but slightly longer video of what I usually discuss with patients.

This video reviews the medical research on knee replacement in a way that patients can understand. For example, most have no idea that many knee replacement patients continue to have significant pain after the surgery. Others don’t know that there are serious health risks like a dramatic increase in heart attacks and strokes as a result of the invasive knee surgery. Still others have no idea that patients with the most severe knee arthritis (the ones most likely to get surgery), have the poorest outcomes from knee replacement. In summary, most patients believe that replacing a knee joint is like taking your car in for a new part, a simple “switcheroo” of pieces. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

I hope you like our new video. Special thanks goes to our dedicated web-master Dave Klein, who works with our skilled animator to take my concepts from my head and make them a reality in animation. I hear our patients sing their praises all the time!
