Rehabilitation Medicine Center’s Approach To Neck Pain

Possible Causes of Neck Pain

Neck pain can interfere with everyday activities—such as turning your head, driving, or lifting objects—and may impact overall comfort and function. When combined with symptoms like headaches, dizziness, or tingling in the arms, the effects can be even more disruptive.

The neck (cervical spine) includes seven vertebrae separated by cushioning discs. These vertebrae connect at the back through paired facet joints, which—along with ligaments, muscles, tendons, and nerves—stabilize and move the neck. Any of these structures may become irritated or weakened and contribute to discomfort. For example, irritation of the cervical facet joints may lead to referred pain in the head or shoulders.

Common contributors to neck pain include:

  • Disc bulges or annular tears
  • Nerve compression (often described as a “pinched nerve”)
  • Joint degeneration
  • Ligament laxity or muscular imbalance
  • Previous injury or cumulative stress from posture or repetitive motion

Physicians at Rehabilitation Medicine Center of New Jersey, NY, part of the licensed Regenexx network, aim to identify the specific structures involved and may address multiple sources of pain through image-guided procedures tailored to each individual’s needs.

Neck pain related to cervical spine conditions may be managed through a range of treatment options, from the least invasive to the most invasive. These can include conservative approaches such as physical therapy, acupuncture, and prescription medications. On the more invasive end of the spectrum is cervical spinal fusion surgery, a procedure in which two or more vertebrae are permanently connected using implanted hardware.

Intermediate options may involve image-guided trigger-point injections or high-dose epidural steroid injections. While these treatments may offer temporary relief, steroid injections have been associated with potential side effects and may impair the body’s natural healing response. Additionally, trigger-point injections can have myotoxic effects, which may negatively impact muscle tissue.

That’s why physicians at Rehabilitation Medicine Center of New Jersey, NY, part of the licensed Regenexx network, offer a different approach focused on addressing the sources of pain using image-guided procedures tailored to each individual.

Although a number of the patients who are recommended surgery truly require it, in our experience, most neck pain can be treated without surgery and its accompanying risks.

During Regenexx’s outpatient procedures, custom concentrations of your body’s natural healing agents are injected into the exact areas of damage in the spine. Treatments use only your own blood to make super-concentrated platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or your own bone marrow concentrate (BMC), which contains stem cells.

Best of all, your downtime will be a fraction of what it is with surgery and generally requires little to no opioid pain medications or time off of work.

At Regenexx, we are dedicated to giving you the information you need to make an informed decision about your best treatment option.

During your initial appointment, your Regenexx doctor will use our four-part SANS (stability, articulation, neuromuscular, and symmetry) evaluation to identify the underlying causes of your pain. Your doctor will examine your injury through a full range of motion and may use ultrasound to observe the inner workings in real time.

This approach gives a more accurate picture of the root cause of your pain.

Once the evaluation is completed, your doctor will determine if Regenexx is right for you and will discuss your customized treatment plan based on your specific needs
