Retired Nurse Finds Nonsurgical Improvement for Her Chronic Knee Pain

  • Patient’s Name: Carolyn
  • Age/Age Group: 60+
  • Body Part: knee
  • Condition/Injury: knee arthritis
  • Top concern: knee pain
  • Treatment: Regenexx SD injectate, which uses bone marrow concentrate that contains stem cells, and Regenexx SCP injectate
  • Doctor: Paras Shah, MD

Carolyn’s chronic knee pain had her using a cane, made it nearly impossible to walk up the stairs, and drastically limited her daily activities. She tried over-the-counter pain medications and had been doing steroid injections for four to five years with little to no relief.

“The first time it lasted about a year. Each time after that, after a few months, I wasn’t noticing any difference,” she says.

Eventually, Carolyn’s orthopedic doctor put her on the list for a total knee replacement. But during a conversation with a friend, she learned about regenerative medicine therapies. While doing some research on these therapies, she came across Regenexx, which seemed to her like “the premier place” for these procedures using Regenexx injectates.

“I was a surgery nurse, and I always thought I was better beside the OR table rather than on it,” she says. “So anything that avoids surgery was preferable.”

At her appointment with Paras Shah, MD, at Spine Injury Regenerative Orthopaedics, he examined her knees and reviewed her MRI results to pinpoint the exact source of the pain. Though Carolyn wasn’t an ideal candidate for the procedure using Regenexx injectates, she opted to go through with it anyway, reasoning that if it didn’t work, she could always have surgery later.

“I’m back doing the things I want to do,” she says. “We went on a trip a week ago that involved a lot of walking, and it was cold and rainy, but I didn’t have any problems…. I don’t have any pain anymore.”
