ACL Tear Management Without Surgery In Phoenix, AZ – Active Life

Do you have an MRI-confirmed partial or complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and have been told surgery is your only option?

Perc-ACLR (percutaneous ACL repair) is a procedure that Regenexx created to treat full and partial anterior cruciate ligament tears non-surgically. ACL tears are one of the more common knee injuries treated by physicians in the licensed Regenexx network, and many non-retracted full and partial tears can be treated in all but the most serious cases.

As the medical director and founder of Active Life Physical Medicine and Pain Center, Innovative Surgery Center, and Regena Spa, Dr. Lundquist has great enthusiasm toward regenerative medicines and a special interest in sports medicine and pain. She loves her work and feels blessed to be entrusted to help patients by alleviating painful ailments.

Her desire is to uncover methods that are more healing and less of a “band aid,” which has led her to become a leader in regenerative medicine technologies. She feels strongly about the importance of seeking methods to help alleviate pain on every level – holistically.

Originally a massage therapist and, later, an osteopath, she has a strong foundation to alleviate patient’s pain. She is a “hands on” physician who implements osteopathic techniques when appropriate with other tools.

She is dual board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation along with pain management, as well as a diplomat with the American Board of Pain Medicine.

How The Regenexx Approach May Support ACL Recovery

Regenexx pioneered a field known as interventional orthobiologics, an approach that uses imaging-guided injections of your cells to support musculoskeletal healing. This process is available at select locations, including Active Life Physical Medicine & Pain Center in Phoenix.
For ACL tears, the cells in your bone marrow concentrate work at the site of your injury. The goal is to place your cells precisely in the ligament tissue to encourage your body’s healing response. Physicians follow Regenexx’s patented lab protocols and injection techniques, designed to maintain consistency across all licensed sites.

Regenexx For ACL Tears: Perc-ACLR

The procedure usually occurs over one day. First, your doctor will extract a small amount of bone marrow using precise imaging guidance, a specialized extraction technique unique to Regenexx.

Once the marrow is drawn and processed by a Regenexx lab technician, you will have time to relax before the reinjection of the harvested bone marrow concentrate into your ACL, done three to six hours later.

Specialized local anesthesia is applied before the reinjection using fluoroscopy (real-time imaging guidance). MRI imaging, along with X-ray contrast, is used to carefully map the torn ligament during the procedure, providing a “roadmap” for your doctor to implant bone marrow concentrate into the damaged areas of the ligament.

After the procedure, your joint will be sore for one to three days, but the pain will become less severe and less frequent within five to seven days. Most patients note that they see improvement in their ACL within a month and can resume light activities and begin physical therapy.

ACL Before And After Imaging

Physicians in the licensed Regenexx network track outcomes using MRI when appropriate. Before and after images can help illustrate changes in ligament appearance following treatment.

In an intact ACL, the ligament typically appears as a continuous dark band on MRI. In some patients, post-procedure imaging has shown improved continuity and structure of the ACL compared to the initial scan.
