Possible Causes of Neck Pain

Neck pain can alter your life, robbing you of basic abilities like lifting and carrying things or turning your head. It can also be debilitating when accompanied by headaches or dizziness.

The cervical spine consists of seven vertebrae with cushioning discs between them. Each vertebra has two joints at the back called facet joints. These structures in tandem with the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves support and control your neck and can be the source of your neck pain and even headaches. For example, the facet joints in this area can refer pain to the head.

Neck pain can result from wear and tear, trauma, or a degenerative condition. It can also be caused by structural issues, such as herniated, torn, or bulging discs, pinched nerves, arthritic or damaged facet joints, loose ligaments, and weak muscles.

That’s why we focus on identifying the underlying sources of pain or injury and treating many of these structures simultaneously.

There’s a spectrum of treatment options to treat neck pain from cervical spine issues. They range from the least invasive (physical therapy, acupuncture, prescription medications) to the extremely invasive, such as cervical spinal fusion surgery, in which vertebrae are permanently joined together with hardware.

More conservative treatment options include trigger-point injections and high-dose epidural steroid injections. While both can temporarily help the pain, steroid injections can cause severe side effects and reduce your body’s ability to heal. And trigger-point injections can be myotoxic, or toxic to the muscle.

That’s why we’ve developed a different approach.

*This provider is NOT authorized by Regenexx to treat the C0-C1 or C1-C2 levels of the neck or CCI (craniocervical instability).

Although a number of the patients who are recommended surgery truly require it, in our experience, most neck pain can be treated without surgery and its accompanying risks.

During Regenexx’s outpatient procedures, custom concentrations of your body’s natural healing agents are injected into the exact areas of damage in the spine. Treatments use only your own blood to make super-concentrated platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or your own bone marrow concentrate (BMC), which contains stem cells.

Best of all, your downtime will be a fraction of what it is with surgery and generally requires little to no opioid pain medications or time off of work.

At Regenexx, we are dedicated to giving you the information you need to make an informed decision about your best treatment option.

During your initial appointment, your Regenexx doctor will use our four-part SANS (stability, articulation, neuromuscular, and symmetry) evaluation to identify the underlying causes of your pain. Your doctor will examine your injury through a full range of motion and may use ultrasound to observe the inner workings in real time.

This approach gives a more accurate picture of the root cause of your pain.

Once the evaluation is completed, your doctor will determine if Regenexx is right for you and will discuss your customized treatment plan based on your specific needs
