Avoid SI Joint Surgery with the Regenexx Approach

The sacroiliac joint connects the base of the spine to the pelvis and plays a key role in shock absorption during movement. When this joint becomes unstable or inflamed, due to injury, overuse, pregnancy, or degenerative changes, it can lead to localized or referred pain that interferes with walking, sitting, or even sleeping.

Common SI Joint-Related Concerns May Include:

  • SI joint instability or lax ligaments
  • Pain after pregnancy or childbirth
  • Referred discomfort from surrounding pelvic structures
  • Degeneration of the SI joint
  • Inflammation caused by injury or overuse
  • Discomfort following lumbar fusion (due to adjacent joint stress)

Conventional treatments for SI joint dysfunction often include high-dose steroid injections or surgical joint fusion. While steroid injections may offer short-term relief, repeated use can affect surrounding tissue and the body’s natural repair response. SI joint fusion, an invasive procedure, removes the joint’s ability to absorb shock and may shift mechanical stress to adjacent joints. One study has shown that approximately 16.5% of patients who undergo lower back fusion require additional surgery within five years, and one-third need revision procedures within a decade. Another study found that 55% of patients continued to use narcotics two years after undergoing surgical fusion.

During outpatient procedures using Regenexx injectates, physicians in the licensed Regenexx network use precise image guidance to inject custom concentrations of your body’s natural healing agents into the exact areas of damage around the SI joint to reduce pain and improve function. Best of all, your downtime will be a fraction of surgery, with little to no need for opioid pain medications or time off work.

As the medical director and founder of Active Life Physical Medicine and Pain Center, Innovative Surgery Center, and Regena Spa, Dr. Lundquist has great enthusiasm toward regenerative medicines and a special interest in sports medicine and pain. She loves her work and feels blessed to be entrusted to help patients by alleviating painful ailments.

Her desire is to uncover methods that are more healing and less of a “band aid,” which has led her to become a leader in regenerative medicine technologies. She feels strongly about the importance of seeking methods to help alleviate pain on every level – holistically.

Originally a massage therapist and, later, an osteopath, she has a strong foundation to alleviate patient’s pain. She is a “hands on” physician who implements osteopathic techniques when appropriate with other tools.

She is dual board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation along with pain management, as well as a diplomat with the American Board of Pain Medicine.
